Figured I better post this here instead of in that other thread... if only it didn't have the weber on it.
I noticed a trend in the other thread, a lot of people talked of owning various 2 seaters. I've owned 2 MR2's, and '85 and '94. 2 Fiero's, an '86 2M4 and an '87 GT (didn't have the lotus suspension, i think that was '88 only). numerous 914's, but as I said, my blue '74 was my favorite. we used to buy parts from George (Automobile Atlanta) when his catalog was a little thin newsprint looking thing and stainless steel heat exchangers were about 250 new!
I remember being young (and not too wise) and taking the old 40/240 loop, the old one the flyover replaced, and flat out LEAVING a mustang as i got on to 240 South. of course within a 1/4 mile all i saw were tail lights, but he couldn't think of keeping up on the ramp.
someone mentioned the 914 being ugly, to each his own, i've always loved them. my dad had the first one in memphis about 3 years before I was born (do the math!). I would have to say between actual cars that could be driven and parts cars, we've had a combined 35-40 of the cars in my lifetime. one of my other favorites had the 916 bumpers and fender flares, it was a 4 cylinder of course.
this was the color of my '74, i LOVE this car
Yes, this is a better place for this conversation. That California car is a pretty clean one. I agree the webers are a turnoff. Mine had the original fuel injection and I would look for that if I was going to have another one. I have heard twin webers are difficult to stay tuned. I do agree that some of the color combinations they had available for these cars were some of the ugliest on any car, but some of that was a sign of the times. In the right colors like your blue one, silver, even my orange, I think they were beautiful cars. A friend of mine had a 76 2.0 in silver that I always though was a pretty car. I have seen your blue color from time to time and I do like it also.
There is a common thread here with Miata folks. I think a lot of us like fun cars. I attribute my 914 ownership as starting this sickness I have for fun 2 seat open air cars. The Miata is fulfilling that desire for me, but the 914 started it. That is a sweet 914/6 in the photograph. They sure are rare. There are a couple of 914's that show up at the autocross most of the time. Last time there was a 914/6. I don't know if it was original though.
Wow, 35-40 cars! That's a lot. It might just take that many to keep two or three on the road these days though.
